Dr. Piran’s broad range of expertise in the field of neurology allows him to provide comprehensive care to patients with a diverse range of neurological conditions including but not limited to…
Stroke and Neuro-vascular diseases
Neurovascular diseases affect the blood vessels and circulation in the brain. When blood vessels to the brain are blocked, malformed, or begin to bleed, oxygen can no longer reach the brain which leads to a stroke. A stroke can cause lasting brain damage, long-term disability, or even death.
There are various types of neurovascular diseases, each needing specialized treatment which can include a healthier diet, medication, surgical procedures, or a combination of these things. Dr. Piran can help inform you of the best options that would suit you so you can address these diseases in the most effective way possible.
Epilepsy and Seizures
Epilepsy is a chronic neurologic disorder that causes repeated seizure activity. Seizures are caused by electric signals coming from your brain being altered or interrupted. They come in many forms and can be triggered by different conditions and situations. There are various types of seizures and forms of epilepsy. Dr. Piran can help address the unique conditions his patients suffer from.
Some of the treatments offered for epilepsy and seizures include medications, surgery to remove a small part of the brain that’s causing the seizures, and putting a small, electrical device inside the body to help control the seizures. This all may seem daunting, but Dr. Piran can help you through the process and help reduce or stop seizures completely.
Parkinson’s and Movement disorders
Dr. Piran has helped treat many different movement disorders such as ataxia dystonia, Huntington’s disease, atypical Parkinson’s, Tourette’s syndrome and other tic disorders, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal degeneration, and multiple system atrophy. These disorders cause abnormal body movements which can interfere with the sufferer’s everyday life.
Though there is no cure for these disorders, Dr. Piran does offer treatments that help with the severity of the disorders. He can also help guide you in lifestyle changes that will help control the disorder.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and Neuro-immunological diseases
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disorder, which is a disease in which the body’s immune system targets normal, healthy tissue. There are other disorders that are similar to MS, with neurological symptoms being a risk factor with some of these disorders.
There are many treatment options available for MS though they are split into two categories: disease modifying therapy, which alters the immune system and minimizes ongoing or new damage, and symptomatic agents, which helps improve symptoms that affect patients in their daily life. There are also non medication suggestions Dr. Piran can make to help increase his patients’ quality of life.
Myasthenia Gravis and Muscle Disorders
Myasthenia gravis is a chronic disease that weakens the skeletal muscles. It worsens after periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Some of the muscles affected by this condition are muscles used to control eye and eye lid movement, breathing, eating, facial expression, and even talking. There is currently no cure for myasthenia gravis, but there are treatments that can help and Dr. Piran is well versed in these treatments.
Treatments for myasthenia gravis include:
Thymectomy: Removing the thymus gland.
Monoclonal antibody: Targeting the process by which acetylcholine antibodies injure the neuromuscular junction.
Anticholinesterase medications: Medications to treat the disorder include which slow the breakdown of acetylcholine, improving neuromuscular transmission and increasing muscle strength.
Immunosuppressive drugs: Dugs that improve muscle strength by suppressing the production of abnormal antibodies.
Plasmapheresis and intravenous immunoglobulin: Treatments to remove destructive antibodies.
Guillan Barre and Nerve disorders
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerves, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. This usually occurs in people older than fifty and about two-thirds of people with GBS were sick with diarrhea or respiratory illness days or weeks before developing symptoms, though the exact cause of the disorder is unknown. Viral infections are also known risk factors, and a small number of people get the disorder after certain vaccines.
Dr. Piran has helped multiple patients with this rare disorder, offering treatments such as plasma exchange (a procedure that removes and replaces the liquid part of the blood) and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy (an infusion of antibodies).
Brain Tumors
A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal cells in your brain. They can be cancerous or non-cancerous. Either type can cause brain damage and be life threatening.
Treatment of brain tumors depend on a variety of factor such as the size of the tumor, if it is cancerous or non-cancerous, the location of the tumor, and the patient’s health. Surgery is often part of this process but can be combined with treatments such as radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Dr. Piran can help guide you through the process of deciding which treatment is best for you.
Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. It’s a progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks. There is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, but there are treatments available to help manage the condition. Medications are often prescribed for those with Alzheimer’s to help slow the progression of this disease and treat other symptoms that can occur as a result of the disease including sleeplessness. Dr. Piran can help choose the best medication for you.
